politicians are afraid to lose the money they're getting paid to not talk about it. former michigan governor jennifer granholm knows full well the consequences of avoiding those debates. detroit still reeling from the financial crisis of '08. and as the governor argues the political talking points, whether it's on lower taxes or deregulations and markets simply ant the answer. jennifer granholm and her husband dan mullhern are authors of a new book, "governor's story: the fight for jobs and america's future." last i saw you, we were talking about the need to focus on efficiency rather than the fuel source debate as one example of the debates that america deserves that it does not get. explain to me how it is that we can get to having the debates that we all want to engage in, from efficiency and learning that health and jobs. >> dylan, the reason why we wrote this the book is because michigan's experience, really, what's happening to the nation now has happened to michigan over the past decade. everyone's scratching their heads about how to figure out how to create jobs in america in a globa

in just over an hour they will be counting votes in a florida straw poll. michigan is holding a straw poll today. the outcome could be critical to candidates who lagged behind. our political reporter is in orlando, florida, two big gop straw polls in one day. let's start with florida. who showed up? >> reporter: today the main top tier candidates mitt romney and rick perry went to michigan for that other straw poll you referenced. candidates here today are those lesser known folks. herman cain. newt gingrich. jon huntsman's family came on their behalf because they're desperate for traction. straw polls are good to show that they are in the race. i have to tell you that herman cain's name has come up a lot here in wake of thursday night's presidential debate. a lot of people thought that rick perry stumbled and activists are deciding between romney and perry but cain's name comes up as offering common sense solutions is the phrase you hear from them. >> let's talk about the straw poll that will take place in michigan. how pivotal is that one? >> reporter: as i said, rick perry and mitt romn

the house's on friday. >>> and a michigan straw poll over the weekend, romney registers just over 50% of the vote with the texas governor finishing far back in second place with 17%. perry also finished a distant second in saturday's florida straw poll to businessman herman cain. cain with a surprising 37% of the vote with perry's 15%. romney finished third in florida with 15%. perry had been considered the front-runner until his disappointing performance at thursday's gop debate. what does this mean for the gop race? we'll ask herman cain live when he joins us right here on "american morning" at 7:40 eastern. >>> president obama is keeping the focus on his jobs plan. after a fund-raiser in seattle, the president will attend a series of evens in california today beginning with a town hall. live at the white house, dan lothian is here to tell us more. >> reporter: about 250 people expected to be at that town hall. we're told the questions will be posed by members of link'd in, also the ceo of that company will pose questions to the president. the focus of that town hall will be on the

obama will spend his labor day in michigan a state hard hit by employment. in his annual address, the president is expected to preview his jobs plan to union workers and their families in detroit. he'll unveil his entire plan in a speech on thursday night. the administration says it will lay out a series of steps that congress could act upon, including transportation and infrastructure initiatives. initiatives to help homeowners and tax breaks to support new hires. >> if you are not hiring, you're unpatriotic according to the international brotherhood of teamers james hoffa. on the state of the union, hoffa called apple, general electric and pfizer unpatriotic for opening factories and stores overseas instead of investing in employment right here in the united states. he said, big companies have a responsibility to get americans back to work and if they aren't doing that, president obama should call them out. >> i think the president should challenge the patriotism of these american corporations that are sitting on the sidelines saying why do we have high unemployment but i'm not

will support this democratic president or will we see in places like michigan what we saw in the reagan days, blue collar reagan democrats helping the republicans? >> i think it's going to be different this time because of the attack on the -- on labor by the tea party. we had 100,000 people at a rally in madison, wisconsin. we had 50,000 people in ohio. we collected a million signatures in ohio. people realize what's going on, that they might have voted republican a small group of organized labor. but i think people are aware now that this group is coming after them. when they start talking about, you know, getting rid of social security, medicare, medicaid, rolling back collective bargaining in major states, i think this is -- this has been the wake-up call an maybe labor needs. and some of those people that voted republican are now going to say, what a mistake i made because i didn't know they were going to take my job away, i didn't know they were going to take clollective bargaining awa. you saw what they did and what they believe in. and you heard this debate in washington with regard

dropped him at the university of michigan for debate camp for three weeks and thought he would be okay. wrong. he called me up two days later and felt dumb. he said the other kids at camp were far ahead of him and started yelling at me for not getting him in a better school. problem is, that he's already in the best school in our city. he says, i don't know what they're preparing us for but it's not college. my poor kid has discovered something we've known for years, not all school districts are created equal. there are at love factors for this, of course. but the one i find most telling is the correlation between poverty and academic achievement. according to the u.s. census bureau, grand rapids, michigan, has a 28.9% poverty rate amongst school age children. only 30% of students who take the michigan exam were proficient in math, 43% proficient in reading. when you look at the poorer cities in my state you'll find some numbers below 10%. conversely, the 10 wealthiest districts have scores in the mid 70s up to 90. how is that leaving no child behind? this correlation, not unique to mi

. breaking news in michigan. police say they are investigating an explosion near monroe, michigan, that seriously injured three people. the scene is located about halfway between detroit and toledo. authorities say a car bomb led to that explosion. >>> another deadly day in mexico. police shut down this busy road in the coastal town of boca del rio after they dumped 35 bodies under a highway bridge. police say it's all connected to organized crime. violence has escalated as rival gangs fight for control there. at least 35,000 people have died in drug violence in mexico over the last five years. >>> nasa says a dead satellite in space will probably make a crash landing here on earth tomorrow. the six ton piece of equipment the size of a city bus was put into orbit back in 1991. nasa experts expect the satellite to break into small pieces before falling. scientists say it could land as far north as canada or as far south as south america, but it will probably land in the ocean. the odds of pieces of the satellite hitting anyone are 1 in 3,200. nasa adds that no one has ever been hit

-- that is a look at "the wall street journal" headlined as women. taking a look as we take the next call. michigan, a cafe, a democrat. caller: i can give you an example of taxes. i am going to be cashing out of my retirement. it is very little, from the state of michigan. 30% between the irs and the federal tax and then i am probably going to be penalized for drawing unemployment -- illegal in the state of michigan. what it will do is amount to 50% tax. the current job that i have -- there are a lot of people will come into the store and buying, and a majority of them are well- to-do. if my employer is what to do. she does not share her wealth. i do not see any poor people coming into the store purchasing anything. and i will be heading off a bank to a food pantry in an hour and a half and i don't see what the people at the food pantry, either. -- will see people at the food pantry. -- wealthy people of the food pantry. there are a lot of well-to-do people in the county and i don't see any philanthropy to the most part. we need to close the loops. in terms of other countries, at the very least th
